Two people were injured after a man lit a gas can on fire and threw it at them on Monday evening, Prince Albert police say.
A 31-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the incident, after police in the Saskatchewan city allege he also set two vehicles on fire.
The incident began shortly after 5 p.m. Monday, when police were contacted by the Prince Albert Fire Department with a report of a vehicle on fire in the 600 block of 18th Street W., in the city’s northwest.
The officers found one vehicle on fire when they arrived, and another vehicle that had been damaged by fire. The blaze was put out by the fire department, police said in a Tuesday news release.
Police said they believed the vehicle was intentionally set on fire, and officers got a description of the suspected arsonist.
A few minutes later, police got a report of a man smashing vehicles and attempting to light something on fire in the 900 block of 14th Street W.
Their investigation determined someone once again tried to set a vehicle on fire there, before he was confronted by people nearby.
The man then got into the vehicle and started driving erratically, before he got out, lit a gas can on fire and threw it at a man and a woman, police say.
Both the man and woman were able to put the fire out quickly. Paramedics arrived and treated both victims, who had what were believed to be non-life-threatening injuries, according to police.
Officers later located the person they believe was responsible for both incidents in the Prince Albert Police Service parking lot, where he was arrested without further incident.
Police say they believe he knew the victims who were injured with the flaming gas can.
The 31-year-old man is facing four charges of assault with a weapon, three counts of arson and a charge for failure to stop at the scene of an accident.
