Three Quebecers, including Montrealer Félix Auger-Aliassime, have been named to the Canadian delegation that will participate in the Davis Cup Finals, which will be held from November 19 to 24 in Malaga, Spain.
In a press release issued Monday morning, Tennis Canada announced that Ontario’s Denis Shapovalov, Quebecers Gabriel Diallo and Alexis Galarneau, as well as veteran Vasek Pospisil of British Columbia, will complete Team Canada, champion of this tournament for the first time in its history in 2022.
Holder of 21e Ranked 1st in the ATP rankings, Auger-Aliassime will represent his country in the Davis Cup for the eighth time and boasts an impressive 13-4 career record in tennis’ premier team competition.
In 2024, Auger-Aliassime reached the final of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, reached the round of 16 at the French Open, won the bronze medal in mixed doubles with Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and placed fourth in singles at the Paris Olympics.
Shapovalov will be at 11e participation in the Davis Cup, and his record is 18 wins and 10 losses.
The youngest member of the team, at 22, Diallo, who hails from Montreal, will be competing in the Davis Cup for the seventh time, while Galarneau, a 25-year-old from Laval, has been named to the Canadian team for the eighth time.
As for Pospisil, the second most prolific Canadian in the Davis Cup, he will defend the country’s colours for the 28e times. He will arrive in Malaga with a record of 32 wins and 27 losses in 34 matches in this competition.
In the quarterfinals, Canada will face three-time champion Germany. If Canada wins that match, it could face Spain in the semifinals.
