There’s a lot to look forward to heading into the new year. Like many people, you’re likely anticipating holiday gatherings, and if part of your preparation involves going into the family attic, you might want to see if there are some boxes with cherished coin collections hidden inside. Some coins will be especially valuable for coin and currency collectors in 2025. To learn about the coins that will have collectors seeing dollar signs, GOBankingRates connected with Dr. Mike Fuljenz, president of Universal Coin and Bullion, and took a look at CoinWeek.

Fuljenz is optimistic that any American Silver Eagles — dated between 1986 and 2024, weighing one ounce and made of 99.9% fine silver — could continue to increase in value this year, since silver is already up over 30% in value this year, part of a continuous chain of growth since 2000. Better yet, the American Silver Eagle is the most popular silver coin in the world.

“Based on the silver spot of $32.00, a reputable dealer should sell you a really nice gem uncirculated coin for $36-$37,” he said.

Fuljenz also has high hopes for American Eagle gold coins as superstar coins heading into the new year. He has very specific insights about what you should look for with these coins.

“I believe an uncirculated American Eagle $5 gold coin containing 1/10 of an ounce of fine gold should continue to increase in value this year, as gold is up 30% in 2024 and has increased over 800% since Jan. 1, 2000,” he said.

He added that gold has increased during the past six presidential election years, and uncertainty — domestically and abroad — can help drive up gold prices. “Based on a $2,678 spot gold price, the $5 American Gold Eagle sells for between $295-$305 from reputable dealers,” he said.

CoinWeek explained these coins, created by the San Francisco Mint, are generally only available to collectors, since they weren’t meant for circulation. However, they sometimes end up in pocket change — which could be decidedly fortunate for you if you come across one. Coins that are in good condition can sell on eBay for about $3 to $5 apiece.
