Fall is a very special time for holidays. It’s sweet, warm, and incredibly romantic. Of course, there are some iconic fall travel destinations such as Kyoto in Japan or Tuscany in Italy. But what about less cliched variants? There are quite many of those, too (and quite worthy ones!).
#1 Podgorica, Montenegro
Okay, Montenegro may not be the first on autumn travel lists, but isn’t that a huge omission? Its vineyards in fall are … well, stunning. If you want to see the local wine production, rent bugatti and head for the Šipčanik wine cellar. They’ve got tours and tastings. That’s a fantastic escape in the best meaning of the word.
By the way, a rented car should be useful not only because of the wine tour. You’ll need it to visit the ancient ruins of Doclea, too. These are just a short drive from the city. The temperatures are usually cooler here and the place itself is super picturesque.
All in all, Podgorica is lovely in the fall. Local markets brim with fall produce (that’s your chance to get a taste of seasonal Montenegrin cuisine!). The temperatures are mild (around 18°C or 65°F), so it’s really pleasant to be outdoors. Accommodation prices are modest but, of course, it’s best to stay outside the city center.

#2 Atlantic City, USA
For most travelers, Atlantic City is a summer destination in the first place. This means that fall offers a slower pace and a more comfortable exploration. That’s particularly relevant for traditionally crowded places such as the famed Boardwalk or beaches.
Another huge draw of Atlantic City in the fall is that accommodations are about 30% cheaper. Now, what could you do here? Well, first and foremost, you could visit the local seafood spots (fresh catches plus ocean views). Besides, you could explore the Marina District. It’s a bit more comfortable to do that in cooler weather.
If you come here in the fall, keep in mind that many attractions may be open with reduced hours (just check ahead). The Boardwalk is ideal for biking (or walking). You won’t probably need a car here.

#3 Harrisburg, USA
Pennsylvania’s capital is picturesque, especially in the fall. Plus, there are lots of cool events every year here. This year, for instance, they are hosting … a Cranberry & Chocolate Festival! That’s right, it’s crazy and so cool; it’ll take place from November, 22 – November, 24. There’ll be lots of tasty stuff and live music.
Besides the events, a riverboat ride along the Susquehanna is the local classic. It gives you a unique vantage point to view the changing leaves. And, of course, there’s the Broad Street Market. Two things that are must-tries here are pumpkin whoopie pies and spiced apple cider.

#4 Ottawa, Canada
Ottawa’s fall is about two things: colorful foliage and vibrant festivals. As for the latter, one of the most impressive of those is the One World Bazaar. It started on September, 17 and will be there until November, 17. Then, there’s also the Ottawa Canadian Film Festival, the Magic Lights of Ottawa, and a lot more. Many events are totally free.
What else to do here? If you aren’t much in the mood for crowded events or activities, Ottawa is equally cool for cycling or walking along the Rideau Canal. And yes, the culinary scene peaks in the fall. Practically all local restaurants offer seasonal menus with classic fall dishes such as maple-glazed salmon.
Like in most places, hotel rates drop so luxury stays are more accessible in fall. The weather remains pleasant: during the day, the temperatures are around 10-12°C (50-54°F), which should be ideal for outdoor activities.

#5 Kraków, Poland
And finally, there’s Kraków. In fall, it transitions into a quieter, yet equally charming city. For sights, head for the Wawel Royal Castle. It’s much less crowded than in summer. To relax, visit the Wieliczka Salt Mine. It’s a very special experience.
Dining outside is still pleasant in autumn. Local cafes and bakeries offer seasonal pastries such as the popular “Pączki.” The latter is filled with rose jam (best enjoyed with a hot coffee!).
