What’s open and closed in the Ottawa area on Victoria Day Monday

The May long holiday weekend is just around the corner, with Environment Canada forecasting a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 24 C for the Ottawa region on Victoria Day.

Here’s a list of what’s expected to be open and closed on Monday.

Events and activities

A Victoria Day celebration will be held at Rideau Carleton Casino, with a fireworks show planned for 9 p.m. on Monday. It’s open to all ages, and admission is free with the donation of non-perishable food items or a donation to the Ottawa Food Bank.

The closing ceremony for the Canadian Tulip Festival will take place on Sunday beginning at 8:30 p.m. A 10-minute, 200-drone show over Dow’s Lake, celebrating the Royal Canadian Air Force’s 100-year centennial, will begin at 9:30 p.m.

Under the City of Ottawa’s By-law, personal fireworks can be discharged on Victoria Day and the days immediately preceding and following that holiday (Sunday and Tuesday).

The Canada Science and Technology Museum, the Canada Agriculture and Food Museum, the Canada Aviation and Space Museum, the Canadian Museum of Nature, the Canadian War Museum, the Canadian Museum of History and the National Gallery of Canada will be open.

The Ottawa Art Gallery and the Diefenbunker will be closed.

Client service centres

The City of Ottawa’s 311 Contact Centre will be open for urgent matters only. All services at Ottawa City Hall, Ben Franklin Place, Terry Fox Drive, Centrum Boulevard and the provincial offences court will be closed. The Business Licensing Centre at 735 Industrial Ave., Spay and Neuter Clinic at 26 Concourse Gate, the Barbara Ann Scott Gallery and the Archives and Gallery 112 at the James Bartleman Centre will also be closed.

Green bin, recycling and garbage collection

There will be no curbside green bin, recycling, garbage or bulky item collection on Monday, May 20. That pick-up takeS place on Tuesday, with collection pushed back by one day for the rest of the week. Multi-residential garbage containers will be collected on the regular scheduled days, though collection of multi-residential recycling containers, bulky items and green bins will be delayed by one day for the rest of the week.

The Trail Road Waste Facility will be open on Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Transit

OC Transpo buses and O-Train Line 1 will run on Sunday schedules.

OC Transpo On-Demand will be available in Blackburn Hamlet, but Rural Shopper Route 301 will not run.

On Saturdays, Sundays and statutory holidays (including Victoria Day) a 2-for-1 DayPass is available for $11.75 for customers 13 years and up. It can be purchased at ticket machines or from bus operators.

The Rideau Centre OC Transpo Customer Service Centre will be open on Monday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The lost-and-found at Heartwood House will be closed, with customers asked to call 613-560-5000 to report lost items.

Para Transpo

Regular bookings or recurring trips are automatically cancelled on Monday. Customers can book trips by calling 613-560-5000 or using My Para Transpo.

The reservations line will be open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the trip cancellation line will be open from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. The Taxi Coupon line will be open.

Customers can also text 57272 to reach customer service representatives from 6 a.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Recreation and cultural services

Most municipal indoor pools, arenas and recreation and fitness centres will be open or operating on modified schedules, with details available online at ottawa.ca.

Some regular public swims may be cancelled on short notice due to a shortage of lifeguards.

Splash Pads are expected to open on Saturday, with any delayed openings due to winter weather impact to be posted online. Washrooms at Mooney’s Bay, Britannia Beach and Petrie Island will also open on Saturday, water levels permitting.

The Arts Court, Nepean Creative Arts Centre, Nepean Visual Arts Centre, city-operated museums and Shenkman Arts Centre will be closed on Monday. The box office at Meridian Theatres at Centrepointe will be closed and the Les Lye Studio will be open for a rehearsal.

Ottawa Public Health

The Site program office and supervised consumption services at 179 Clarence St. will be closed. The Site mobile van will operate from 5 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

The Sexual Health Clinic and satellite clinics, dental clinics and the Parenting-In-Ottawa drop-ins will be closed.

The immunization program telephone line will be closed. Visit the ParentingInOttawa and the COVID-19 vaccine webpages for vaccination clinic hours and availability.

Other city services

All four Employment and Social Services offices and all municipal child-care centres will be closed on Monday.

All branches of the Ottawa Public Library (including Bookmobile, Homebound services and InfoService) will be closed. Digital content, services, and program listings will be available online.

Shopping

The Rideau Centre and Tanger Outlets will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Monday.

The Bayshore Shopping Centre, St. Laurent Shopping Centre and Place d’Orleans will be closed.

Several grocery stores will be closed on Monday, though others — including the Metro on Bank Street and the Whole Foods at Lansdowne — will remain open.

Beer Store retail locations at 1860 Bank St., 1984 Baseline Rd. and 548 Montreal Rd. will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

On the Quebec side of the Ottawa River, Les Galeries de Hull, Les Promenades de l’Outaouais and Costco in Gatineau will be open.
