Real Madrid evaluating Maignan swoop amid Milan contract talks

Must read

Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan’s wage demands continue to stall talks for a new contract, amid reports Real Madrid are showing an interest.

The shot-stopper was drafted in from Lille for €16.4m in the summer of 2021 to replace Gianluigi Donnarumma, who moved to Paris Saint-Germain as a free agent.

He went on to be pivotal in their Scudetto triumph and helped them reach the Champions League semi-final, but the rapport has soured recently.

Maignan’s contract is due to expire in June 2026 and negotiations for an extension hit problems due to his wage demands.

He is asking for €7-8m per season, more than Rafael Leao earns and crucially a lot more than the €5.5m maximum that Milan are ready to pay.

Maignan contract situation alerts Real Madrid

With that in mind, a sale next summer is more than plausible and TeamTalk maintain Real Madrid are keeping a close eye on the situation.

Carlo Ancelotti has struggled to find a reliable shot-stopper in recent years, going through Kepa Arrizabalaga, Andriy Lunin and the ageing Thibaut Courtois.

A potential concern is Maignan’s injury record, as he has suffered quite a few muscular issues, including a calf strain that kept him out for several months in 2022-23.
