The 2024/25 Champions League season officially kicked off on Tuesday, and the first red card arrived on Matchday 1.
Angel Gomes of Lille was the first player to earn his marching orders after two yellows in the first half against Sporting Lisbon.
The moment arrived minutes after Viktor Gyökeres opened the scoring for the hosts with a swivel and strong finish into the bottom right corner.
That was his first Champions League goal, and he now has 17 goal contributions in 10 games for club and country.
The striker looked to make it a quick brace, but Gomes’ rash challenge on his ankle two minutes later forced Lille down to 10 men.
It’s an example of the highs and lows of football for Gomes, after making his England debut (and impressing) just last week.
