Gas prices edged up across Canada over the past week, with the average cost per litre of regular fuel in cities nationwide increasing 0.3 cents between Sept. 26 and Oct. 3, according to data from Kalibrate.

Calgary and Edmonton, Alta. saw the biggest weekly increases, at 6.2 cents and 4.3 cents, respectively. North Bay, Ont. posted the biggest weekly drop, with a decline of 8.6 cents, followed by Labrador City, Nfld., which saw prices drop 7.4 cents. Gatineau, Que. and Sudbury, Ont. both saw prices fall 6.5 cents.

Prices were down across Quebec, with the average decline amounting to 2.5 cents. Ontario cities also mostly saw price drops, with the exception of Kingston and Sarnia.

This comes as oil prices surged this week, amid concerns that an escalating conflict in the Middle East could disrupt supply. Oil rose for the third straight session on Thursday, with West Texas Intermediate futures (CL=F) gaining more than five per cent. Prices were on the rise Thursday and pushed even higher after U.S. President Joe Biden was asked if he would support Israel striking Iran’s oil facilities and responded “we’re discussing that.”
