Yellow thunderstorm warning issued as Met Office forecasts more heavy rain

Must read

The UK is set to be battered by heavy rain and thunder and lightning on Monday as the wet weather shows little sign of letting up.

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for thunderstorms from 4pm until midnight, when heavy showers are expected to hit southern parts of the UK.

The warning is in place across the south of England and large parts of the south west, while south Wales is also included.

Among the towns and cities where thunderstorms are forecast are London, Portsmouth, Southampton, Brighton, Bristol, Swindon, Bath, Bournemouth, Cardiff, Newport and Swansea.

The Met Office said some areas will see between 20mm and 30mm of rain within the space of just two to three hours, while there is a chance that a few places could have 40mm of rainfall.

The warning means heavy showers and thunderstorms may cause some travel disruption, the Met Office said.

Flooding of homes and businesses is possible, as are power cuts, while lightning strikes may cause damage to buildings.

It comes after the Met Office warned that the UK could see more heavy rain and high winds later this week from the tail end of Hurricane Kirk.

A Met Office spokesperson told Yahoo News UK on Monday: “A yellow national severe weather warning for thunderstorms has been issued for parts of southern England and Wales from 4pm today.

“Areas of heavy showers and thunderstorms will move northwards across southern parts of England and Wales later this afternoon, before clearing northwards overnight.

“Thunderstorms are most likely for south-facing coastal districts, and hail and some strong gusts of wind could accompany the heaviest showers and thunderstorms.”

Yahoo breaks down what the weather will be like for each region of the UK, according to the Met Office.
