Crews tackle railway track fire in Wallaceburg

Fire crews in Chatham-Kent say it’s not yet known how railway tracks in Wallaceburg caught fire on Tuesday afternoon.

Chatham-Kent Fire and Rescue crews were sent to the area of Running Creek Road just before 1 p.m. after getting reports of “large flames.”

“When crews arrived, there were five-foot flames and black smoke coming from railroad ties,” the municipality said in a media release Tuesday evening.

Multiple crews were involved in battling the blaze.

The municipality says the Ministry of Environment was made aware of the blaze.

“Neighbouring homes were visited to advise about toxic smoke in the area, this warning has now been lifted,” the municipality said.

The cause is “undetermined.”
