Canada gains a net 46,700 jobs in September, jobless rate edges down to 6.5%

OTTAWA, Oct 11 (Reuters) – Canada’s economy gained a net 46,700 jobs in September, entirely in full-time work, and the jobless rate edged down to 6.5%, Statistics Canada data showed on Friday.

Employment in the goods producing sector fell by a net 3,600 jobs, largely in agriculture. The services sector was up by a net 50,200 positions, mostly in wholesale and retail trade, as well as information, culture and recreation.

NOTE: Analysts surveyed by Reuters had forecast an increase of 27,000 jobs in September, and for the unemployment rate to rise to 6.7%. Hourly wage figures are for permanent employees.
