While responding to reports of a shed on fire at a Deer Lake home, police in western Newfoundland in say they found a body.

At around 12:30 p.m. N.T. on Sunday, the RCMP was alerted to a shed on fire by a Middle Road home.

“An occupant of the home was unaccounted for and was believed to be inside the shed,” RCMP said in a statement Tuesday.

“Firefighters extinguished the blaze. Male human remains were located inside the shed.”

A fire scene investigator with the Department of Justice and Public Safety’s fire services division was sent to the scene. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is also involved.

Police, who said the investigation is ongoing, are asking people who were in the area to check any surveillance footage they might have.
