Dwight Gayle admits his first goal for Hibs was bitter-sweet, given it came in a game the capital club threw away in injury-time at Tannadice.
The former Newcastle and Crystal Palace striker’s header had Hibs on course for their first away victory of the league season, before goals on 93 and 99 minutes gave Dundee United all three points. Gayle’s goal, in the end, counted for little.
“Yeah, it’s a really frustrating result,” Gayle said. “It’s been a frustrating time for us. The last two games have not been good enough, we know that ourselves. We’ve got to pick ourselves up and try to make up for it [in the Edinburgh derby] next week. It’s not been good enough and the boys know it.
“It’s always a ‘must-win’ game against your city rivals but even more so now after the last two performances. We were in good positions and then we just haven’t been good enough collectively. We’ve all got to look ourselves in the mirror and start asking questions.
“It was nice to get my first goal for Hibs but it’s not what I’m here for. It’s more important that we get the result so I would happily not have taken a goal if it meant that we got all three points. After we went down to ten men we found it difficult and they got the two goals.”
Despite the fact Hibs have only claimed five of the available 24 points so far this term, Gayle has no regrets whatsoever about the move north after spells at Stoke City and Derby County.
“It was a no-brainer for me with the size of the club,” Gayle added. “The facilities are great and I feel really at home. Hopefully I can continue to progress, try to get some more goals and help the team get some points on the board.”
