Winfield man on ‘dream trip‘ found dead after fire in Canada

WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – A 77-year-old Winfield man is dead following a fire in Canada.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said an elderly man who was a guest at the Driftwood Motel in Deer Lake was reported as missing after the fire on October 19.

Human remains were found on the property Wednesday morning and identified as those of the missing man.

According to an obituary on the Miles Funeral Service website, Eugene Earl “Gene” Spoon, 77 of Wichita, died following a fire at the Driftwood Motel in Deer Lake while on a dream moose hunt trip in Newfoundland, Canada.
