Must read

Two of the chilliest nights of the fall season are in store for southern Quebec, and the island of Montreal isn’t immune.

Montreal hasn’t fallen below 0.80°C so far this fall, but that’s hours away from changing with the coldest temperatures since March 25 (-5.30°C).

It’s late, too, since the average first occurrence of a subfreezing temperature is during the first half of October, so we’re a couple of weeks behind schedule here. By Nov. 8, the average low falls below freezing on a daily occurrence.

With the encroaching cold comes the risk posed to crops and plants, so shelter them appropriately, pets and vulnerable populations. We can’t also forget a surge in energy costs to keep buildings heated during the cooldown.

This week:

Tuesday will be a few degrees warmer, and Wednesday will see even higher temperatures, with many places expected to reach or exceed 20°C with a gusty, southwest wind. We will also be watching the potential for [a record-warm Halloween on Thursday]((https://www.theweathernetwork.com/en/news/weather/forecasts/halloween-attempts-to-cast-cold-spell-across-canada-but-half-will-fight-back) with high temperatures in the upper teens and lower 20s.

At this point, however, it looks like a cold front will bring a period of showers during the day or on Thursday night, so there is still some uncertainty regarding conditions for trick-or-treating. While temperatures will be a treat, the weather will be more tricky.
