Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live alongside host John Mulaney and musical guest Chappell Roan.
The vice president’s flight from Charlotte to Detroit was diverted to New York, and a few hours later she appeared in the cold open as the reflection of Maya Rudolph who impersonates Harris on the show.
A shocking new poll out of Iowa, a state in which neither candidate has campaigned, has put the Democratic candidate three points ahead of Donald Trump — a 12-point swing against the Republican since the 2020 election.
The Des Moines Register observes that much of the shift to Harris from the former president comes from women and independents. Approximately 20 per cent of the voters in the Republican Iowa caucus backed Nikki Haley over Trump.
Earlier today, the former president said that “women have to be protected when they’re at home in suburbia” as he attempted to double down on his previous comment that he’d protect them “whether they like it or not.”
Some 70 million Americans have already voted early according to data gathered by CNN. Both candidates spent Saturday in North Carolina as the focus on key battlegrounds with just days left before the election.

RFK Jr says Donald Trump would push to remove fluoride from drinking water
03:10 , Oliver O’Connell
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent proponent of debunked public health claims whom Donald Trump has promised to put in charge of health initiatives, said Saturday that Trump would push to remove fluoride from drinking water on his first day in office.
Fluoride strengthens teeth and reduces cavities by replacing minerals lost during normal wear and tear, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The addition of low levels of fluoride to drinking water has long been considered one of the greatest public health achievements of the last century.
Kennedy made the declaration on the social media platform X alongside a variety of claims about the health effects of fluoride.

Which politicians have appeared on ‘Saturday Night Live’ in the past?
03:00 , Oliver O’Connell
In short, a lot!
Donald Trump hosted himself at the start of his political career in 2015 and in 2004 when The Apprentice was riding high in the ratings. But he’s certainly not alone.
Hillary Clinton was running in the 2008 Democratic presidential primary when she appeared next to Amy Poehler, who played her on the show and was known for launching into a trademark, exaggerated cackle. The real Clinton wondered during her appearance, “Do I really laugh like that?”
Clinton returned in 2016 while running against Trump in a race she ultimately lost.
The first sitting president to appear on SNL was Republican Gerald Ford, who did so less than a year after the show debuted. Ford appeared in April 1976 on an episode hosted by his press secretary, Ron Nessen, and declared the show’s famous opening rejoinder, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night.”
Then-Illinois Sen. Barack Obama appeared alongside Poehler impersonating Clinton in 2007, and Republican Bob Dole was on the show in November 1996 — a mere 11 days after losing that year’s election to Bill Clinton. Dole consoled Norm Macdonald, who played the Kansas senator.
Then there was Tina Fey’s 2008 impression of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin — and in particular, her joke that “I can see Russia from my house.” It was so good that Fey eventually won an Emmy and Palin herself appeared on the show that October, in the weeks before the election.

What happens if a convicted felon wins the presidency?

Earlier this year, Donald Trump made history by becoming the first former president ever convicted of a crime.
Now, with Election Day looming and the Republican neck-and-neck with Kamala Harris in the polls, he could make history again: by becoming the first convicted felon elected to the nation’s highest office.
Joe Sommerlad looks at what that might mean.

Trump camp responds to new Iowa poll showing Harris in lead
02:18 , Oliver O’Connell
Rattled by this evening’s poll showing Kamala Harris leading Donald Trump by three points in Iowa — a state not believed to even be in contention — the Trump campaign has put out a memo called the Des Moines Register poll, conducted by Selzer, an outlier.
The memo refers instead to a poll by Emerson released earlier today which shows Trump up by 10 points (53-43%) and, oddly, to the 2020 results as if nothing might have changed since then.
Per the memo:
In the outlier Des Moines Register poll, they claim Harris leads with seniors (age 65+) by 19 points (55-36). In 2020, President Trump carried seniors 54-45 over Biden according to CNN exit polls.
The Emerson College poll released today concurs with the CNN exits from 2020, with President Trump solidly ahead 54-45 among voters aged 60-69, and 54-44 among voters aged 70+.
The Des Moines Register also claims Harris leads by 20 points among women (56-36). In 2020, President Trump tied Biden 49-49 among women according to CNN exits.
Once again, Emerson College’s poll today is more similar to the exits, showing instead a lead for President Trump of 5 points – 52-47.
Des Moines Register claims President Trump leads 51-39 among voters without a college degree. In 2020, President Trump won non-college voters by 17 points (58-41).
Here’s the front page of tomorrow’s Des Moines Register:

Blow for Republicans as Supreme Court allows Pennsylvania contested ballots to be counted
00:50 , AP
The Supreme Court on Friday rejected an emergency appeal from Republicans that could have led to thousands of provisional ballots not being counted in Pennsylvania as the presidential campaigns vie in the final days before the election in the nation’s biggest battleground state.
The justices left in place a state Supreme Court ruling that elections officials must count provisional ballots cast by voters whose mail-in ballots were rejected.
The ruling is a victory for voting rights advocates, who had sought to force counties — primarily Republican-controlled counties — to let voters cast a provisional ballot on Election Day if they had realized that their mail-in ballot was to be rejected for various garden-variety errors.

Why might Iowa swing to Harris?

Journalist Lyz Lenz, who has spent the past 20 years writing and working as a journalist out of Iowa, has an idea as to why the state could potentially swing to Kamala Harris after this evening’s bombshell poll.

Shock poll puts Harris ahead in Iowa
Saturday 2 November 2024 23:29 , Oliver O’Connell
J Ann Seltzer, widely considered to be among the best pollsters in the country, has just published her final survey of Iowa for The Des Moines Register.
To the surprise of many it shows a 12-point swing to the Democratic Party ticket since 2020, putting Kamala Harris three points over Donald Trump in the Hawkeye State at 47% to 44%.
Per the paper:
The results come as Trump and Harris have focused their attention almost exclusively on seven battleground states that are expected to shape the outcome of the election. Neither has campaigned in Iowa since the presidential primaries ended, and neither campaign has established a ground presence in the state.
A victory for Harris would be a surprising development after Iowa has swung aggressively to the right in recent elections, delivering Trump solid victories in 2016 and 2020.
The poll shows that women — particularly those who are older or who are politically independent — are driving the late shift toward Harris.
“Age and gender are the two most dynamic factors that are explaining these numbers,” Selzer said.
The poll of 808 likely Iowa voters, which include those who have already voted as well as those who say they definitely plan to vote, was conducted by Selzer & Co. from October 28-31. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.4 percentage points — so any lead Harris has is within that.

Scaramucci says Harris campaign is ‘nauseously optimistic’
Saturday 2 November 2024 23:00 , Oliver O’Connell
In his latest blog for investment platform Saxo, former Trump communications director Anthony Scaramucci says the Harris campaign is “nauseously optimistic”.
They’re saying they’re nauseously optimistic – not cautiously – they’re nauseously optimistic. They’ve got a pit in their stomach, but they’re looking at their data and they like their data.
They’re looking at the women’s turnout and they like it. The elder vote in Pennsylvania is way down. It means older people are saying, “I’m not going to vote. I don’t like her, so I’m not going to vote for her, but I can’t vote for this anymore”.
His final message to Americans as the country casts their vote is to back Kamala Harris, even if you have to “hold your nose”.
I would be telling them I’m for Harris. While I may not agree with every single policy, she’s a constitutionalist and she’s for our system. He’s talking about shaking the system and going after his enemies.
Imagine a politician who wants to go after his enemies in a democracy that has free speech, versus if you were railing against her and she won, you would have zero worries about her coming against you.
So, I would appeal to their individual liberty and say if Donald Trump is coming after Liz Cheney, which you may think is distant from you, but that’s a domino toppling that’s heading towards you because that’s how really bad things start.
If you don’t like her or her tax policy, hold your nose and vote for her, because she represents a system that has made the country the most prosperous economy in the history of the world.

More than 70 million Americans have already voted with Election Day just three days away.
Data from 47 states and the District of Columbia gathered by CNN, Edison Research and Catalist, a data and analytics company, shows that 71.5 million ballots have been cast.
That is about 45% of the 158 million votes for president cast in 2020.
Amid the Covid-19 pandemic, about 70% of votes were cast ahead of Election Day. During the midterms in 2022, the split was roughly even between those who voted early and those who waited until Election Day.
Georgia is leading the way with early voting at 80% of 2020 votes. In 14 states more than half of the votes of those registered have been cast.

Cast of ‘The West Wing’ partner with Lincoln Project to endorse Harris
Saturday 2 November 2024 21:15 , Oliver O’Connell
Members of the cast of the iconic television show The West Wing have reunited to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for President. They partnered with the Lincoln Project to produce a new ad:
The group released this statement of endorsement:
“We had the good fortune to work together on a television show called The West Wing. Our White House was a make-believe world. We dealt with real-life issues, from reproductive rights to national security, but when we went home at the end of the day, no one’s life was changed based on what happened in our fictional world.
“On November 5th, America will make a decision that will have profound consequences for every American and for the American Experiment itself. This is not an ordinary election. Democracy is on the ballot. Lives will be changed based on the choice of millions of Americans.
“We came to our West Wing with different personal politics and backgrounds. But it was impossible to work on this show without sharing a deep pride in what it meant to be an American. We were lucky to work together for years but we knew our greatest good luck was waking up each day as part of the world’s oldest democracy.
“The White House is home to more than the President’s family and staff. It holds the aspirations of generations striving to make the idea of America embody the best within us all. It is a symbol to the world of freedom, decency and hope.
“We support Kamala Harris for president because we love America. As the Vice President said a few days ago on the hallowed ground of the Ellipse, ‘This election is more than just a choice between two parties and two different candidates. It is a choice about whether we have a country rooted in freedom for every American or ruled by chaos and division.’”
“We choose freedom. We choose Kamala Harris.”
The message is signed by actors Martin Sheen, Bradley Whitford, Allison Janney, Dulé Hill, Josh Malina, Nelly Moloney, Mary McCormack, and Richard Schiff.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Free Press has Harris up by three percentage points over Trump in Michigan, 48% to 45% but with a margin of error of +/- 4%.
Better news for Trump in the former swing state of Florida, where the latest Stetson poll finds him leading Harris by seven percentage points, 53% to 46%, with a margin of error of +/- 5%.
And in true blue Massachusetts, Harris is comfortably ahead by 30 percentage points according to the MassINC Polling Group’s final poll, which had her leading 61% to 31%.

What are exit polls? How to understand them on Election Night
Saturday 2 November 2024 20:00 , Rhian Lubin
This Election Day, voters will be monitoring their TVs, laptops and phones as results of this year’s presidential and congressional elections pour in.
With just days left until November 5, the latest polls show Kamala Harris and Donald Trump neck-and-neck in their race for the White House. Meanwhile, Democrats are working to gain control of the House of Representatives as Republicans vie for a majority in the Senate.
Exit polls are a key indication of the potential results, as pollsters survey voters after they cast their ballots to determine who they backed and how they feel about certain issues.

“The truth is this Kamala Harris will protect your right to disagree with her about policies or ideas and then as we have done for centuries.”

Trump defends his previous comments about protecting women.
He told the rally: “Women have to be protected at their homes in suburbia.”
“If they [women] don’t have me… they’ve got millions of people pouring through and coming up to the suburbs. Well, the suburbs are under attack right now, when you’re home, in your house alone, and you have this monster that got out of prison, you know, six charges of murdering six different people. I think you’d rather have Trump.”
“You’re not allowed to say a woman is beautiful,” he added. “If you do that, that’s the end of your political career. But I’ve never had, you know, I mean, women sort of like it, but you can’t do it.”

John Bolton has warned that he doesn’t believe Donald Trump will accept the election results if he loses and “we should be ready” for him to reject them if Kamala Harris wins.
The former national security adviser, who has turned on Trump, was asked whether he believed the former president would accept the results if they are not in his favor on Tuesday. “No, I don’t think so,” Bolton told CNN’s Kaitlin Collins. “And I think we should be ready for it.”
“I think everybody ought to be ready because Trump never loses. And if he loses, it’s because it’s ‘stolen’ so it will be difficult,” Bolton added.

Early voting in Georgia exceeds 4 million
Saturday 2 November 2024 15:30 , Alex Woodward
Early voting in Georgia has exceeded 4 million, according to officials.
A Statement from Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger’s office said it was “unprecedented”.
Here’s the statement in full:
Georgia voters exceeded the 4 Million mark on Friday, concluding the last day of Early Voting. To date, 4,004,588 voters have cast ballots either by voting early or absentee by mail.
With 55.3% turnout, Georgians cast 3,761,968 ballots during Early Voting, and 242,620 ballots by mail. As of Saturday morning, 92 Georgia counties have exceeded 50% turnout. This is unprecedented in Georgia history.
During Early Voting in 2018, there were 1,890,364 voters who cast ballots. 2,697,822 cast ballots in 2020, and 2,289,933 cast ballots in 2022.
“This was the most successful Early Voting period in Georgia history because voters trust the process,” said Secretary Raffensperger.
“Four years of progress brought us here. We’re battle-tested and ready, regardless of what the critics say. And we’re going to hold those who interfere in our elections accountable.”
Trump goes all-in on North Carolina as Harris makes a play
Saturday 2 November 2024 15:00 , Eric Garcia
Former president Donald Trump will kick off his final weekend in Gastonia, North Carolina as he seeks to keep the Tar Heel State in his column.
Trump won North Carolina twice. But polling shows he and Vice President Kamala Harris are in a dead heat in the state.
In turn, Trump will hold another rally in Greensboro later on Saturday while his running mate Senator JD Vance of Ohio and Trump’s namesake Donald Trump Jr will hold a rally in Raleigh.
On Sunday, he will hold a rally in Kinston, North Carolina and a rally in Raleigh on Monday.
But Harris is also making a play. On Saturday evening, she will hold a rally at the PNC Music Pavilion, which seats 19,500 people.
How much damage can a free Steve Bannon cause before the election?
Saturday 2 November 2024 14:30 , Rhian Lubin
In 2016, Steve Bannon had Donald Trump’s ear.
Now, eight years later, he is the mouth of the MAGA movement, writes Kelly Rissman.
On Tuesday, Bannon became a free man — and immediately renewed his support for Donald Trump — after a four-month stint at FCI Danbury following a contempt of Congress conviction for not complying with a House panel investigating the January 6 insurrection.
The 70-year-old with a shaggy gray mop and ever-present scruff may appear unassuming, but the damage he can do in the final stretch of the election could be consequential, given his track record and his constant proximity to a microphone.

Trump threatens to ‘knock the hell out of people backstage’ over faulty mic

What happened to Trump’s first cabinet?

Donald Trump’s first stint as commander-in-chief between 2017 and 2021 was anything but smooth sailing, with firings and acrimonious departures as much a feature of his administration as it was central to his hit NBC reality show The Apprentice.
And, the years that followed have also been eventful for the most notable characters from his presidency.
Some have ended up in prison or criminally charged in connection to their involvement with the former president.
Some have become his most vocal critics, sounding the alarm about the dangers of a second term.
Few are still on speaking terms with him.
Now, with the election, and therefore a possible Trump second term, just days away, here’s a reminder of some of the key figures in Trump’s first administration – and where they are now:

Trump’s record of leaking intelligence and doubts over his new team have allies worried, experts say
Saturday 2 November 2024 11:00 , Oliver O’Connell
Rhian Lubin writes:
ith days to go until America decides who will become the next president, there are concerns among some US allies over one of the most important aspects of their relationship with the world’s most powerful nation — intelligence sharing.
While a Kamala Harris presidency is expected to fit into a more predictable pattern of intelligence handling, security experts say some US allies have more “anxiety” about the alternative: Donald Trump’s return to the White House.
The Independent spoke to experts in intelligence, national security, and foreign policy from the UK, Australia, and Canada on the implications of a second Trump term. They all agree that the stakes couldn’t be higher – and suggest that the Republican candidate’s track record when it comes to leaking secret information is one of their causes for concern.

Republicans claim Black men are deserting the Democratic Party. Is it even true?
Saturday 2 November 2024 08:00 , Oliver O’Connell
John Bowden writes:
When election returns start coming in Tuesday evening, one group is certain to be in the spotlight: Black men.
For the past year, pollsters, pundits and political operatives have been hard at work spinning a narrative about Black voters, and younger men in particular. Those voters, many have warned, are increasingly turning away from the Democratic Party, which has enjoyed a massive advantage among Black voters for decades.
“Black men are rapidly abandoning the Democratic Party”, a triumphant headline declared on the website of the conservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI) earlier this year. That assertion was backed up by a poll from the NAACP in August, which found that as many as one in four young black male voters were considering voting for Donald Trump.

Ella and Cole Emhoff: What to know about Kamala Harris’s stepchildren
Saturday 2 November 2024 05:00 , Kelly Rissman
Vice President Kamala Harris was once called a “childless cat lady” by Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance — a claim that the childfree community, her husband’s ex-wife, and even Jennifer Aniston have slammed as sexist.
It’s also just plain wrong. The presumptive Democratic presidential nominee actually has two step-children thanks to her husband Doug Emhoff, whom she wed in 2014. Emhoff had two children, Ella and Cole Emhoff, with his first wife, Kerstin — and the pair affectionately refer to Harris as their “momala.”
“For over 10 years since Cole and Ella were teenagers, Kamala has been a co-parent with Doug and I,” Kerstin Emhoff told CNN. “I love our blended family and am grateful to have her in it.”
Here is what you need to know about Harris’s family.

Harris caught herself, quickly adding, “He will not,” to cheers.

Trump talks jobs report but misses crucial factor
Saturday 2 November 2024 02:46 , AP
Donald Trump said at his rally that the US jobs report issued today, which showed that employers added 12,000 jobs in October, showed that the Biden-Harris administration is failing on the economy.
Last month’s hiring gain was down significantly from the 223,000 jobs that were added in September.
“This is like a depression,” Trump said of the numbers as he heaped insults on Harris.
Economists estimate that Hurricanes Helene and Milton, combined with strikes at Boeing and elsewhere, pushed down net job growth by tens of thousands of jobs in October.
Trump did not mention that.
