Dundee winger Julien Vetro collapsed in the dressing room before Sunday’s 3-2 Scottish Premiership win over Kilmarnock – but was back from hospital in time to celebrate the dramatic victory for his side.
The 20-year-old Frenchman, who arrived on loan from Burnley in the summer, was initially listed among the substitutes for the match at Dens Park.
But after fainting and lying unconscious, kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes while Vetro received treatment.
“It was a real concern, particularly for the players witnessing that,” Dundee manager Tony Docherty told BBC Sport Scotland after the match.
“It was pretty worrying for a spell but he has been taken to hospital, they have done checks on him and he is back in the dressing room celebrating with his team-mates.
“The good news is that he is okay, but it was not a nice situation for his team-mates to see that.”
It is the second time a Dundee player has collapsed this season, with midfielder Mohamed Sylla suffering an anaphylatic shock at half-time of the defeat by Aberdeen in September.
Dundee battled back from two goals down to beat Kilmarnock with Vetro’s fellow Frenchman, Ziyad Larkeche, netting the winner in stoppage time.
Larkeche dedicated his dramatic goal to his friend.
“He is feeling well so to see him after the game with a big smile, it was a big relief for me,” the defender said.
“Before the game I was thinking: ‘If I score, this goal will be for Julien.’
“I was really worried, he is one of my close friends here and when you see someone like that, I was really concerned so this goal is for him and also for Mohamed [Sylla] because he just had a kid.”
