The hostile atmosphere of Rams Park provided Tottenham teenager Will Lankshear with an evening of mixed fortunes.
With his team contributing to their own struggles against hosts Galatasaray for large parts of the contest, the 19-year-old enjoyed a first-half moment to remember.
Granted a rare opportunity to impress, there was delight, as he registered his first senior goal in only his second start for the club.
However, it turned to despair after the break, as he received two bookings in quick succession to earn his first red card in professional football.
With Spurs already 3-1 down at the time it prompted a positive reaction from his teammates, who actually grew stronger – albeit the complacency and profligate finishing of the home side also contributed to the final scoreline.
But it also provided Lankshear with an early taste of the discipline and concentration required to succeed at the top level, with his second booking – a reckless challenge on former Norwich midfielder Gabriel Sara – borne out of his frustration at losing the ball cheaply.
