Wolves’ Cunha lauded after influential performance against Southampton

Wolves have a star on their hands in the vein of Brazilian international Matheus Cunha.

The 25-year-old versatile forward has been one of the few bright spots in the 2024-25 Premier League season as Gary O’Neil’s outfit languishes in the bottom three.

But after a recent undefeated run, including their first win of the campaign in a 2-0 win against Southampton at the Molineux, Cunha has received justifiable praise from former Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards.

“I thought it was one of the best individual performances I’ve seen in a Wolves shirt in recent years or in modern history” said Edwards, when speaking to the Official Wolves Podcast.

“You don’t want to be the fall guy. But Matheus Cunha is the opposite. He wants people to give him the ball and he’ll show you how to win this game.”

Such recognition has been a long time coming for the João Pessoa-born forward, who first burst onto the scene in Switzerland with FC Sion at the age of 18 before making the jump to Bundesliga upstarts RB Leipzig.

But a frustrating posting with Die Roten Bullen was followed up by equally questionable spells at Hertha Berlin and Atlético de Madrid before finding his way to the Midlands, where he may now finally be truly making good on his potential.

Currently sitting on five goals and two assists in 11 league appearances this term, Cunha could be just the tonic to what ails a struggling Wolves side.
