Bayern Munich have confirmed they will retire the no.5 shirt in memory of Franz Beckenbauer.
The iconic number remains vacant following Benjamin Pavard’s move to Inter last summer and has been worn by a total of 22 players since ‘Der Kaiser’ vacated it.
But Bayern president Herbert Hainer confirmed at the club’s AGM on Sunday that it will be held in tribute to their iconic former captain and coach, who died in January.
“The number 5 remains reserved for a unique legacy,” said Hainer.
“Because our club and its history are simply unthinkable without Franz.”
Beckenbauer won 15 major honours across three combined spells with Bayern, including a hat-trick of European Cups during a lengthy stint as a player.
He later served as the club’s president for 15 years before stepping down in 2009.
