Striker Martyn Waghorn has terminated his contract with League One Northampton Town by mutual consent.
The 34-year-old former Leicester City and Derby County forward joined the Cobblers on a short-term deal at the start of November and scored one goal in eight appearances.
The club, under the caretaker control of Ian Sampson following the resignation of manager Jon Brady 12 days ago, said the agreement to part ways with Waghorn was “amicable”.
“Martyn came in and helped us through the last few weeks and all parties have now agreed to terminate the contract,” Sampson said.
“We thank Martyn for his time with the club and we wish Martyn and his family all the very best for the future.”
Sampson added Waghorn was a “first-class character” and “a good man”.
Waghorn, who has played for 12 different clubs in his career, scored seven goals in the Rams’ promotion-winning campaign last season as the club secured a return to the Championship.
His one goal this season came in Northampton’s 5-2 EFL Trophy defeat by Burton last month and his final appearance was from from the bench in Saturday’s 3-0 loss at Rotherham.
