A 10-year-old boy died on the weekend after he lost control of the snowmobile he was driving in south-central Manitoba, RCMP say.

The collision took place on private property about six kilometres north of the community of Rosebank on Sunday, and officers responded shortly before 8 p.m., police said in a news release.

Officers and emergency responders were told the boy, who was driving a snowmobile with a group of family members, side-swiped a fence before he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a tree, RCMP say.

The boy was wearing a helmet and other safety equipment at the time of the crash, but died from his injuries in hospital.

RCMP are investigating the boy’s death with a collision reconstructionist.
