Why Alberta Should Be on Your Holiday Travel Wishlist

Must read

There’s no place like home for the holidays, but Alberta is a destination worthy of any holiday travel wishlist. Christmastime in the Canadian Province is like walking in a real-life winter wonderland. The snow-covered trees, picturesque mountain towns and decorations in December will make you feel like you’ve stepped into a Hallmark movie. While romance isn’t guaranteed like in one of those flicks, you can still romanticize your life by booking a trip to experience the magic of Alberta during the most wonderful time of year.

So, if you’re dreaming of a winter getaway, here are places to see and go in Alberta:

Calgary

With Calgary International Airport being the closest airport to Banff National Park, you’ll likely start your winter escape in the Stampede City a.k.a. Calgary. It’s a vibrant city with plenty of places to shop, stay and dine. Rouge, which partners with local food growers and uses homegrown produce, along with the sky-high restaurant Major Tom are delicious options for dinner, while the Fairmont Palliser, which is decked for the holidays, is a comfortable and convenient hotel, located within walking distance to stores, to rest your head at night.

Kananaskis

After a good night’s rest, it’s time to embark on your alpine adventure. On the way to Kananaskis, canine lovers won’t want to miss the Yamnuska Wolfdog Sanctuary, which offers an interactive wolfdog experience. Following the visit, grab lunch at The Ridge, located inside of the Stoney Nakoda Resort & Casino, before continuing on to Mount Engadine Lodge. Disconnect from the world (literally, if you’re in one of the tents) and explore the snowy wonderland surrounding the resort, or grab a heavenly hot chocolate and take in the breathtaking views from the wilderness lodge’s outdoor patio, or read a book by the fireplace. The cozy backcountry lodge features six lodge rooms, three private cabins, five glamping tents and one yurt. Meals, plus an afternoon tea service, are included and activity rentals are available, including a cross-country ski set and snowshoes. More than a mountain retreat, Mount Engadine Lodge is an unforgettable experience.

Canmore

Just an hour away from Mount Engadine Lodge is Canmore. With the holiday lights around town and the Festival of Trees at the Malcom Hotel, you’re sure to feel the holiday spirit. The hotel is a quick walk to Downtown Canmore. During your visit to the town, carve out time to walk the Bow River Loop trail, drive to see The Three Sisters, grab a pizza at Rocky Mountain Flatbread Co., coffee from the Bicycle Cafe and dinner at Bridgette Bar. And if you’re looking to get your maple syrup fix, you are in Canada after all, swing by the Maple Station.

Banff

Banff, which has all the charm of a Hallmark town, is a must-see for travelers in Alberta. While it’s a year-round destination, Banff is even more magical at Christmastime with snow on the ground and holiday decorations and events. The iconic Fairmont Banff Springs, nicknamed the Castle in the Rockies, is a picture-perfect setting for a Christmas getaway. Browse the beautifully decorated halls or pay a visit to the North Pole at the castle, where one can also enjoy a festive afternoon tea at Rundle Bar. Shop for holiday presents, listen to music and meet the one and only Santa Claus at the delightful Banff Christmas Market. Those with a sweet tooth can embark on a hot chocolate trail through the town, buying hot chocolate from different restaurants and cafes. Over at the Cascade of Time Garden, travelers can experience a Christmas story told by the wildlife of Banff National Park at the “In Search of Christmas Spirit” event. There is no shortage of places to eat in Banff, including Bluebird, The Fat Ox, Banff Social, The Vermillion Room and Eden at The Rimrock Resort Hotel.

Of course, no trip to Banff National Park is complete without a visit to Lake Louise. This time of year, Lake Louise is a winter postcard come to life, with snow-covered trees surrounding the frozen lake. Starting in December, skates can be rented from the iconic Fairmont Château Lake Louise, or drinks can be ordered from the Ice Bar or Santa Bar—a holiday-themed pop-up. The luxurious château also offers a number of events to hotel guests, including a gingerbread house workshop, Christmas cookie decorating, festive card creation, a scavenger hunt and much more.

With the Canadian Rockies draped in snow and holiday magic in the air, Alberta at Christmastime truly is a winter wish come true!
