An Abbotsford dancer is among a team that captured a world championship title in October.
Asher Abdullah, 16, helped to represent Team Canada Dance at the IDO (International Dance Organization) Hip Hop World Championship in Skopje, Macedonia, where they claimed the gold medal.
The event ran Oct. 9 to 15, attracting nearly 5,000 dancers from 35 countries.
Abdullah was among 24 dancers on Team Canada who performed choreography by Roberta Bierman of B.C.
The event – often referred to as “the Olympics of dance” – featured hip-hop, popping and street dance battles, as well as a diverse lineup of performances and special appearances from world-renowned judges.
Abdullah has been training in hip hop and other street styles of dance since the age of five at Creative Edge School of Arts in Abbotsford.
He has won numerous awards over the years at B.C. dance competitions.
Team Canada Dance is a national organization under the direction of Bonnie Dyer with its head office based in Ontario.
