Air Canada has unveiled updates to its Basic and Comfort economy fare structures, effective January 3, 2025.

These changes aim to align with similar fare offerings by other Canadian carriers while providing clearer differentiation between its fare options.

Changes to Basic Fare

For Basic fare travelers on North America and Sun routes, ticket terms will be revised as follows:

  • Baggage Policy:
    • Passengers traveling with Basic fare tickets purchased on or after January 3, 2025, will still be allowed one small personal item, such as a purse or laptop bag.
    • Larger carry-on items, including roller bags or large backpacks, must be checked before security, incurring a fee of $35 for the first bag and $50 for the second bag.
    • Ineligible carry-on items brought to the gate will require gate-checking at a higher fee of $65 per item.
    • Exemptions: Mobility aids, medical devices, and child strollers remain exempt from carry-on fees. Status members, Star Alliance Gold, and Aeroplan premium credit cardholders will continue to enjoy complimentary carry-on allowances as part of their benefits.
  • Seating Policy:
    • Complimentary seat assignments will still be available at check-in for passengers who opt not to pre-select seats. However, from January 21, 2025, passengers wishing to change their seat after assignment will need to pay a fee, determined by the seat selected.
    • Families, individuals requiring assistance, and traveling companions will continue to benefit from seating arrangements that prioritize their proximity to one another, as per current policies.

Enhancements to Comfort Fare

For travelers opting for the Comfort economy fare, Air Canada has increased the checked baggage allowance for tickets purchased starting January 3, 2025:

  • New Allowance: Comfort fare customers traveling globally will now be entitled to check two complimentary bags, an enhancement from the current allowance of one checked bag.

Commitment to Customer Convenience

Air Canada emphasized its commitment to customer convenience and inclusivity, retaining exemptions for essential items and ensuring families and companions are seated together.

These updates reflect the airline’s effort to remain competitive and transparent while enhancing its fare offerings to meet diverse traveler needs.
