Gabriel Bannigan has been confirmed as the new manager of Monaghan, succeeding former Farney boss Vinny Corey, who relinquished the position in August after two seasons at the helm.

Former Leitrim manager Andy Moran, John McElhone and Damien Freeman will form his backroom team.

Bannigan spent two seasons as a selector during Corey’s time in charge.

“Monaghan GAA is delighted to announce that Aughnamullen native Gabriel Bannigan was formally ratified as Senior Football Manager by Monaghan County Committee at a meeting earlier this evening,” read a statement released by Monaghan GAA on Thursday evening.

“Gabriel will be joined by Andy Moran, John McElhone and Damien Freeman and has been appointed for a three-year term with a review after two years.

“Best wishes to Gabriel and his backroom team.”

Corey stepped down from the role in August after an indifferent campaign which included relegation from Division One of the Allianz League, an Ulster Championship exit at the hands of Cavan in the preliminary round and defeat by Galway in the preliminary quarter-finals of the All-Ireland Series after advancing from the group stage.

Bannigan’s coaching career has included spells working with Dublin clubs Kilmacud Crokes and St Sylvester’s and with his home club Aughnamullen, whom he took from junior to senior football within three seasons in Monaghan.
