Originating from the United States in the early 2000s, Black Friday marks the Friday after Thanksgiving, which is symbolically seen as the beginning of the Christmas shopping period.

Over the years, the day has grown to become a massive sale event where thousands of global retailers offer huge savings on the day, often offering their lowest-ever prices of the year.

This year, Black Friday itself lands on Friday 29 November 2024.

Originally, Black Friday only lasted 24 hours — but as time has gone on, most retailers and brands don’t just limit their sales to a single day. Instead, we see early deals start on November 1st and run for the entire month.

A lot of retailers also opt for a Black Friday week, with deals starting on the Monday (25th) before Black Friday and ending on Cyber Monday, which, this year, trickles over onto Monday 2 December.

How can I find the best deals?

Set up alerts or notifications

One of the easiest ways to keep in the loop with deals is by setting up notifications. This will vary between retailers, but most of the time, you’ll be alerted once a price changes.

Sign up to a free account where you can

If you have an account ahead of time, already armed with important details like your name and address, you’ll be able to swiftly head to checkout without running into any potential issues. It also means you’ll be able to favourite items you’re interested in prior to the sale starting.

Carefully read reviews

It might sound obvious but if you want a real idea of how a product works, what the quality is like, and whether it lives up to expectation, then giving the reviews a read before purchasing is always a good idea.

Create a wishlist

Do your research beforehand and make a list of the items you want the most. This way, you’re less likely to buy impulsively (although, sometimes it can’t be helped if there’s a fantastic offer).

Use the item filters when they’re available

Filtering deal pages helps narrow down your selection based on everything from price, discount percentage, customer ratings and more. It also means you’re not inundated with offers you’re not interested in.
