Canada added only 22,000 jobs in August

Must read

Employment generation in Canada has been below expectations, with only 22,000 jobs being added in August. This is only a 0.1 per cent increase from July 2024. As per expectations, about 23,700 jobs should have been added. This weak show is attributed to the loss of about 2,800 jobs in July, as per the data from Statistics Canada.

Does that mean newcomers in Canada may have to struggle for jobs? Certainly seems so, because the unemployment rate went up 0.2 percentage points, to 6.6 per cent. That means, more people are hunting for jobs in vain.

The unemployment rate is probably the highest since the COVID-19 pandemic.

There was a net increment of 65,700 part-time jobs, while the number of full-time jobs dropped 43,600.

Canada may implement the 24-hour a week work limit for international students. Students do not require a work permit to pick up jobs outside the campus, provided the employee and their employer confirm that they have work permission to work off-campus before the job starts. The study permit specifies the terms and conditions that allow students to work while they are studying. If there is any violation, students may be asked to leave the country altogether.

Eligible full-time students are anyway allowed take up work outside the campus for 20 hours in a week when their academic session is on. Now, the revised rule, when it comes into effect later this year, will allow them to work for 24 hours a week.

Temporarily, Canada had allowed students to work more than 20 hours a week, but the relaxation had come to an end by end of April. It was discontinued from 1 May, 2024.
