Canada has been ranked among the top three safest countries in the world for 2025, according to Berkshire Hathaway Travel Protection’s (BHTP) annual State of Travel Insurance Safest Destinations report.

The report, based on surveys of US travelers and safety indices, places Canada third behind Iceland and Australia. Montreal also ranks among the top 10 safest cities globally, securing the sixth spot.

Since 2018, BHTP has compiled safety rankings based on the experiences of US travelers over the past five years, combined with external data on safety risks like terrorism, natural disasters, and health measures.

Canada’s steady rise in the rankings reflects its ongoing appeal as a safe destination, regularly appearing in the top 10.

Iceland returned to the number one spot this year, while Australia and Canada claimed second and third places respectively. Reykjavik was named the safest city, reclaiming its position after slipping in the previous year, while Honolulu dropped from first to 13th.

BHTP’s research integrates data from sources such as the US State Department and The Economist, along with safety indicators from GeoSure Global and Global Finance magazine. This produces a weighted safety score for each country and city.

Carol Mueller, head of marketing at BHTP, pointed out that countries like Switzerland and Singapore have become regular fixtures in the top 10. However, she emphasized the importance of purchasing travel insurance to protect against unforeseen risks, regardless of a destination’s safety ranking.

The top 15 safest countries include: Ireland, Switzerland, New Zealand, Germany, and Japan. BHTP’s report has been conducted since 2016 and continues to offer insights into travel safety and insurance needs.
