In the world of outerwear, it’s not often that style and function go hand in hand. In the case of the Canada Goose Olivine Coat, that’s thankfully not the case.
Designed with unpredictable weather in mind, this lightweight coat is ideal for fall, which is why I chose to bring it with me on a recent trip to Ireland. I put it to the test on several blustery days exploring Dublin and Belfast – cities not necessarily known for their balmy weather.
If you’re considering a new addition to your wardrobe that can take you through Canada’s ever-changing fall weather, I go over everything you need to know about this Canada Goose jacket, below.
Summary of the Canada Goose Olivine Coat
Consider the Olivine Coat (and the shorter Olivine Jacket) a fashion-forward take on the classic canvas rain jacket. It features an oversized fit with a dramatic high collar and a removable wrap hood. The coat also features an elasticized waist that can be worn cinched in to highlight your waist or loose for a relaxed fit. It’s designed for transitional weather, making it a great choice for fall and spring.

Canada Goose Olivine Coat review
There’s no denying the fact that Canada Goose’s outerwear is an investment, starting at $1,395 for the shorter Olivine Jacket. You’ll want to make sure that this style actually suits your needs before buying, so here’s what you need to know.

My experience: Despite its fashion-forward appearance, this coat does actually hold up against the elements. I was caught in the rain several times while wearing this coat and didn’t end up wet at all – in a light downpour, rain would simply bead off its exterior. In heavier rain the coat keeps you dry, but the exterior does start to absorb some water. Given it’s rated by Canada Goose to be water repellent and not waterproof, I was still happy with this performance. If you’re after a waterproof option, your best bet will be the Canada Goose Salida Jacket.
Fit: This coat has an intentionally oversized fit that I appreciate, but may not be everyone’s cup of tea. I like that I was able to wear a thick sweater underneath without feeling restricted (even when wearing my regular size). Stick with your true size for a billowy effect or size down for a more form-fitting look.

Favourite features: This has to be one of the most stylish rain jackets I’ve ever worn. It received plenty of compliments when I wore it out and about – friends called it “chic,” which is not necessarily a word that comes to mind for rain gear.
It’s also incredibly versatile, as I’ve worn it while hiking cliffside, traversing through the city and even out to dinner without feeling like it looked out of place.
Least favorite features: This coat has a detachable hood which is great for versatility. However, it’s a little too easy to remove for my liking. The hood is only attached by snap buttons, so I found that it would sometimes get caught under the straps of my crossbody bag or backpack and start to undo.

After wearing the Canada Goose Olivine Coat for the last few weeks, I’m an even bigger fan than when it was first delivered. It’s the perfect weight for fall weather and has kept me dry on several rainy days. My only complaint with it is that I wish that a zipper could have been used to attach the hood for a little extra security.
