On Thursday, Nov.28, the country’s first -40 temperature of the season was recorded.
And the frosty locale is… Old Crow, YT.
The tiny town of Old Crow reached an official temperature of -40.4°C this morning. November is typically the month when winter weather begins to settle in across most of Canada, but it’s been a much milder start to the season for many, so far.
A cross polar air flow is responsible for bringing cold Siberian air across to northern Canada, resulting in these frigid temperatures.
This is a bit later than usual for Canada to see its first -40°C temperature. In 2020, Mayo, YT reached -40 early on November 19. In 2022 and 2023, Eureka, Nvt. was the first to see -40 temperatures in mid November. Eureka was the first place this year to reach -30°C on November 8.
There will likely be more places to reach these frosty temperatures in the coming weeks as we head into the winter season. Western Canada in particular could see colder than normal temperatures heading into the winter. The next temperature threshold that Canada could reach is -50 but that may not come for a while.
