Canada’s Jobless Rate Drops for First Time Since January

The economy added 47,000 jobs across Canada in September, while the unemployment rate declined for the first time since January to 6.5 per cent.

The job numbers are out for September, and they show that unemployment in Newfoundland and Labrador dropped to 10 per cent from 10.4. That’s still the highest of any province by far with Alberta the next highest at 7.5 per cent.

Unemployment in the metro region dropped to 6.8 per cent from 7.1.

Statistics Canada says youth and women aged 25 to 54 drove employment gains last month, while full-time employment saw its largest gain since May 2022.
