A 26-year-old Indian techie must choose between a lucrative job offer worth Rs 41 LPA in Bengaluru and obtaining Canadian citizenship. Currently living in Canada, the engineer faces a tough choice that many in the industry can relate to.
The techie mentioned he earns about 85,000 CAD (Rs 52 lakh) with a bonus. Nevertheless, he finds “life is getting tough” as the cost of everything has skyrocketed.
The man, who spends 2300 CAD (Rs 1.42 lakh) on rent and utilities, also faced the pressure of Canada’s limited healthcare access and the hours-long waiting list for non-emergency medical cases.
Now, a company has offered him a managerial position in Bengaluru with an annual salary of Rs 36 lakh plus a Rs 5 lakh bonus. The engineer, who has never worked in India before, expressed concerns about working under an Indian manager.
Moving to India poses a conundrum as it may affect his Canadian citizenship. Staying in Canada would mean getting citizenship in 1.5 years while a job in India would extend this to at least 2.5 years. However, he feels that it would be beneficial to be in India due to his mother’s health issues.
He continued that although he intended to obtain Canadian citizenship and relocate to the US, he would most likely live in India and take advantage of a brief opportunity to visit the US.
While the techie must look at his long-term professional ambitions and personal aspirations in addition to his immediate cash prospects, Redditors dived in to offer their wise advice.
A user suggested, “Get citizenship and then leave. Passport gives you the power to your CV as well. Not having a Visa requirement makes getting a job easy.”
“Stick around till citizenship and then do whatever,” said another.
Yet, the third user said, “Come back now, the country already took a major toll on your health. While you get PR, you will trade it off with precious time with your family and friends back home…”
Another suggested, “Just don’t compare only Canada and India. See the opportunities in other countries if you get a Canadian passport. Helps you in decision making.”
