Charges laid in east end fire that caused $1M in damages

Ottawa Police Service Arson Unit identified and charged two individuals after a fire at a commercial business in Ottawa’s east end.

On Feb. 21, Ottawa fire were called to a business in the 5300 block of Canotek Road, between Rainbow Street and Green Creek Drive just before 11 p.m.

Crews reported smoke and flames coming from the storefront and several 9-1-1 callers said they could see flames from Highway 174. Fire crews said propane inside the building created a hazard for firefighters and that the store housed both rims and tires, adding fuel to the fire. The fire was declared under control shortly before 1:30 a.m.

On June 13, police said they have charged the accused individuals that broke in and set fire that caused upwards of $1,000,000 in damage to the business.

Edward Ayoub, 46, Hamade Al Mouhamad Al Rahmou, 24, both of Ottawa have been charged with:

  • Arson Causing Property Damage
  • Possession of Incendiary Materials
  • Breaking and Entering
  • Conspiracy to Commit an Indictable Offence

Al Mouhamad Al Rahmou was also charged under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act with possession of a Schedule I substance.

Both men accused will appear in court on June 13.
