Chiefs vs. Steelers score, live updates: Kansas City looks to clinch AFC No. 1 seed on Christmas Day Netflix NFL special

Must read

It’s looking like another Merry Christmas for the Kansas City Chiefs in 2025. The two-time defending Super Bowl champions have the NFL’s best record and have been the most clutch, if not fortunate, team in the NFL this season, but great teams know how to make their own luck from time to time. Despite Patrick Mahomes having maybe the worst statistical season of his career — you could do a lot worse than 23 touchdown passes against 11 interceptions on a 67% completion rate and 240 yards per game with seven game-winning drives this season — the Chiefs travel the NFL’s No. 3 ranked scoring defense to Pittsburgh on Christmas Day for what could be a low-scoring slugfest in the NFL’s first-ever broadcast on Netflix.

That’s because the Steelers have the No. 7 scoring defense, with both teams allowing fewer than 20 points per game. Pittsburgh is hoping to get more out of its offense on Christmas, with George Pickens expected back in the lineup. The team’s leading receiver has missed the past three games with a hamstring injury, and the Steelers lost two of those three.

The Chiefs have already won the AFC West and can lock up the 1-seed with a win. Pittsburgh missed a chance to win the AFC North against Baltimore last Saturday, but can still win the division by closing the season with two wins.

Live19 updates

  • Russ TD scramble gets Steelers on the board

We have a game. The Steelers have cut it to one possession. Russell Wilson caps an 11-play, 72-yard drive with a one-yard touchdown scramble around the left end. He reaches out for the pylon just before going out of bounds. Chiefs 13, Steelers 7

  • Kansas City punts for first time

The Chiefs didn’t take advantage of the turnover. They punt after a 3-and-out. Pittsburgh has the ball on second-and-6 while facing a 13-0 deficit at the end of the first quarter.

  • Russ pick spoils would-be Steelers scoring drive

The Steelers appeared to answer with a quick-strike touchdown late in the first quarter. But Jaylen Warren’s 8-yard touchdown run was negated by a holding penalty. Then Russell Wilson did this: An interception in the end zone to Justin Reid keeps the Pittsburgh off the board. Chiefs still lead, 13-0.

  • Mahomes invokes MVP self on 2nd Chiefs TD drive

This is the Patrick Mahomes that Chiefs fans know and love. Mahomes made two masterful plays to lead Kansas City to its second touchdown in two drives.

The first was a drive-saving scramble and wrist flick for a first down on third-and-11.

One play later, he found Justin Watson deep for a 49-yard gain.

It all set up this touchdown pass to Watson for an early 13-0 lead.

Kansas City is dominant on both sides of the ball in the first quarter.

  • Chiefs catch a break on fumbled punt return

Kansas City forced a punt on Pittsburgh’s second possession, then caught a break on the return. Returner Nikko Remigio fumbled on the return. But the ball bounced off a Steelers player and back into the hands of his Chiefs teammate Deon Bush. Chiefs recover the fumble and take over with a 6-0 lead.

  • Here’s the Xavier Worthy celebration that drew the penalty. Apparently the jersey lift at the end is the offending move.

  • Chiefs strike first

Kansas City takes advantage of the good early field position with a 42-yard touchdown drive capped by a Xavier Worthy touchdown catch from Patrick Mahomes. But it wasn’t perfect.

Andy Reid burned two of Kansas City’s three first-half timeouts. And Worthy was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for his touchdown celebration. It’s not clear what irked officials, but it cost the Chiefs 15 yards on the extra point. And Harrison Butker missed. 6-0 Chiefs.
