Ottawa firefighters battled a two-alarm fire at a mechanic’s shop in Ottawa’s South Keys neighbourhood on Tuesday afternoon.

Ottawa Fire Services spokesperson Nick DeFazio said the fire originated in a car inside the garage, but the car was moved out into the yard, where it continued to burn, and other nearby vehicles caught fire, along with a 45-foot trailer full of tires.

Those burning tires caused thick plumes of dark, billowing smoke, which prompted calls to the fire department shortly after 2 p.m., the fire service said on social media.

Firefighters arrived at the 2600 block of Mac Street, near Hunt Club Road, shortly thereafter.

“Firefighters initiated a fast attack but were evacuated out of the area due to live hydro wires burning and coming down to the ground,” the social media post reads.

DeFazio said the hydro wires landed on hose lines, so firefighters needed additional hoses and a new water source in order to continue fighting the fire.

The fire service’s HazMat team was dispatched to the scene and protected the manholes, so no water runoff went into the city sewers.

“Our Foam Truck was also dispatched to the scene to help extinguish the fire,” the social media post says.

“Firefighters prevented the fire from spreading to the structure of the business” and the fire was declared under control shortly before 3 p.m.

No injuries were reported, and the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.

Our HazMat Team set up a decontamination line to clean the personal protective gear of our crews due to the high level of hydrocarbons and carcinogens caused by the fire.”
