Florida Atlantic has fired head football coach Tom Herman, according to multiple reports.

Associate head coach and special teams coordinator Chad Lunsford will take over as interim head coach for the remainder of the season, according to reports. FAU has not confirmed the decision.

Herman was in his second season as FAU’s head coach and compiled a 6-16 record. The Owls are 2-8 this season and have remaining games on their schedule against Charlotte and Tulsa.

FAU has lost six straight games, including an overtime defeat to Temple on Saturday. The 18-15 loss dropped FAU to 0-6 in the AAC as the only team without a win in conference play.

Herman, 49, joined FAU in 2023. He spent a single season in 2022 as an offensive analyst for the Chicago Bears. He was previously the head coach at Texas from 2017-20 at a Houston for two seasons prior to that. Texas went 32-18 under Herman and didn’t win a Big 12 championship during his tenure. Texas fired him in 2021 following a 7-3 campaign.

Florida Atlantic is seeking its first bowl game appearance since playing in the Montgomery Bowl after the 2020 season, when it finished 5-4 in the COVID-19 shortened campaign. FAU hasn’t posted a winning record in a full season since finishing 11-3 in 2019.
