Arsenal need “under the radar” Gabriel back as soon as possible, says former Gunners defender Carl Jenkinson.

The 26-year-old picked up the injury on Sunday when Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez collided with the back of the centre-back’s left knee.

Despite initially carrying on, he had to be helped off the pitch and down the tunnel with half an hour left to play and was later seen on the bench with an ice pack on his knee.

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta did not know the immediate extent of the injury following the match and said Gabriel “could not run”.

“It looked quite an awkward sort of movement and they’re often the ones that can cause a few problems,” Jenkinson told BBC World Service.

“I’m really hoping, as an ex-Arsenal player and fan, that he’s good as gold because Gabriel’s a huge player for Arsenal, absolutely huge. He doesn’t probably get the recognition he deserves because he’s playing [alongside] one of the best in the league, if not in the world, these days in William Saliba.

“Sometimes he quietly goes under the radar. We need those two together because they’re so good as a partnership.

“I do have a few worries at the moment because there’s quite a few injuries in that back line. Fingers crossed for him because he’s such a huge player for Arsenal, the club need him out there as much as possible.”
