Gas prices rose 3.4 cents per litre of regular fuel on average across Canada over the past week, according to data from Kalibrate. Ontario’s densely-populated Greater Toronto Area (GTA) saw consistently higher costs at the pump.

Gas prices in Vancouver and Lloydminster, Alta. saw average prices rise the most between Nov. 14 and Nov. 21. However, the GTA was blanketed with gains between three and four cents per litre.

On Tuesday, Statistics Canada said gas prices were a significant factor as annualized inflation climbed two per cent in October.

“Year-over-year, gasoline prices fell to a lesser extent in October (-4.0 per cent) compared with September (-10.7 per cent),” the agency said. “The smaller decline is partly attributed to a base-year effect, as prices fell 6.4 per cent month-over-month in October 2023, stemming from lower refining margins and weaker global oil consumption.”

Oil jumped nearly two per cent on Thursday as the Russia-Ukraine war escalated. Year-to-date, West Texas Intermediate (CL=F) is flat, while Brent (BZ=F) crude is down one per cent.
