With 2025 just around the corner, you might be considering a new nursing job or looking for a government job with Health Canada.
If that sounds like you, listen up! Health Canada is hiring nurses across Canada, and you could make close to $100,000 if hired, plus an annual education allowance of up to $3,850.
This isn’t your standard job posting, though. Health Canada has an open inventory for occupational health nurses, which means they’re collecting applications on an ongoing basis to fill positions as needs arise.
This inventory of nurses will be used to staff full-time and part-time positions in cities such as Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal, among many others.
The salary for these jobs ranges from $81,513 to $92,653 a year, with nurses eligible to receive an annual education allowance from $605 to $3,850, depending on the education level.
As an occupational health nurse with Health Canada, you’ll work within their Specialized Health Services Directorate as part of the Public Service Occupational Health Program (PSOHP). This program provides essential services to federal government departments, including occupational health evaluations, communicable disease services, and occupational hygiene advice.
You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team that includes nurse practitioners, physicians, administrative officers, and managers. The team works together to improve the health and well-being of Canada’s federal employees.
To qualify, you’ll need a degree in nursing, nursing administration, nursing education, or a certificate or diploma in occupational health nursing. You must also be eligible for registration as a nurse in your province or territory.
At least one year of experience as a registered nurse in occupational health assessments or disability management services is required, along with experience in at least two of these areas: immunizations, Tuberculin Skin Tests (TSTs), occupational audiometry, or occupational spirometry.
Language requirements vary depending on the position. Some roles require English only, while others are bilingual. Applicants must also meet specific physical and travel requirements, including the ability to manually lift equipment up to 20 kilograms.
A valid driver’s license is required, as some roles involve same-day or overnight travel to various work sites.
This open inventory process allows Health Canada to build a pool of qualified candidates for immediate or future needs. Applications are accepted regularly, and hiring managers review them periodically to fill roles as they become available.
