Ipswich host Manchester United in Sunday’s late Premier League kick off as Ruben Amoriom takes charge of his first game since making the move to Old Trafford.
The Portuguese coach was appointed following the sacking of Erik ten Hag and should benefit from Ruud van Nistelrooy’s steadying interim period which saw the team win three of their last four games across all competitions.
Work still needs to be done though as United sit 13th though the gap between them and a top four spot is just four points. Amorim has been drilling the squad in his preferred 3-4-3 system so expect a new look formation when the teams take to the pitch today.
As for Ispwisch, they also want to improve their position after securing their first league win of the season in a 2-1 victory over Tottenham. Ipswich boss Kieran McKenna was an assistant coach at United and will hope to get one over his old club this afternoon.

Another United counter fails to produce anything and Garnacho concedes a free-kick near halfway. It’s disjointed once again here, from both sides,

Another lull in activity here as the subs look to settle, with Dalot prevented from getting in-behind by Tuanzebe.

It’s livening up a bit here, with Rashford and Fernandes combining before the latter’s cross is cleared.
United make two subs, with Manuel Ugarte and Luke Shaw replacing Evans and Casemiro.

United break quickly and it’s Garnacho and Rashford in a two-on-one, but Cajuste does very well to slide in and dispossess Garnacho. From the corner, Eriksen eventually fires right at Muric.

Some good hold-up play from Delap on halfway leads to another chance as it’s swept wide to Burns, whose cross is deflected into the path of Delap, and his flick forces another good save from Onana.

The two sides are back out onto the pitch at Portman Road, so we’ll be back underway soon.
HALF-TIME! Ipswich 1-1 Manchester United
17:30 , Chris Wilson
It was an electric start from United to score within the first two minutes, but almost immediately after they just refused to kick on. Most of their promising play is coming from the wings, but there hasn’t been an awful lot of chance creation for the away side.
Conversely, Ipswich reacted very well to going down, creating plenty of chances, and they deserved their equaliser and that bit of good fortune.
We’re in for an intriguing second period here.

There’ll be three minutes of added time here, and we’re into minute one.
Once again, it’s all a little pedestrian at Portman Road.
Ipswich 1-1 Manchester United

United get forward for the first time in a while, but it ends with Amad curling an effort straight at Muric. Moments later, there’s a break in play after Delap collides with Evans.

GOAL! The hosts are level!
Ipswich have been the more threatening of the two sides and they’re level, with Hutchinson cutting inside from the right and hitting an effort that takes a deflection off the head of Mazraoui and nestles in the top corner!
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
17:12 , Chris Wilson
40 mins
CLOSE! What a save this is.
Ipswich break with a great pass to Davis, and he gets into the box before layinguit off. It runs to Delap, who looks certain to score, but Onana makes himself big and gets a strong hand to it.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
17:11 , Chris Wilson
39 mins
Half a chance for United and Dalot should do better really, as he’s found in-behind the defence with a good long pass from Casemiro. He takes it under control, but can only hit a tame effort at Muric.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
17:09 , Chris Wilson
37 mins
There’s a brief break in play once more as the referee informs the players that there is a problem at Stockley Park, and so VAR is currently not operational. Let’s hope nothing contentious happens then.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
17:07 , Chris Wilson
35 mins
Davis is okay to carry on, and play resumes with Szmodics sweeping it out to Burns, whose cross is blocked. Moments later, Garnacho is found near halfway and he’s almost clean through, but he can’t win the footrace with Tuanzebe, and the chance goes begging.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United

32 mins
Leif Davis is down injured for now, so there’s a brief break in play.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
17:04 , Chris Wilson
31 mins
Ipswich win another corner and it’ll be Davis to deliver again. It’s a good cross into the back post, and it’s headed back across goal, but Dalot manages to make the block from Hutchinson’s shot.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
17:01 , Chris Wilson
28 mins
Hutchinson takes the free-kick and it’s curled on target, but too close to Onana.
There’s some better attacking play from United too, but it ends with Dalot clipping a cross straight into the gloves of Muric.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
16:59 , Jamie Braidwood
27 mins
It’s a bit disjointed from both sides at the moment. Mazraoui spreads it to Diallo, but United are forced backwards before losing the ball. Delap leads the counter, and surges towards the box before winning a free-kick off Evans right on the edge of the box.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
16:56 , Chris Wilson
24 mins
Ipswich win a corner after some good combination play from Burns and Szmodics. Davis delivers the set-piece, but Onana catches it fairly easily.

Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
16:45 , Chris Wilson

Not a lot to report from Portman Road since that last chance. Both sides have been guilty of giving the ball away a little too easily at times, with neither side really dominating.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
16:42 , Chris Wilson
11 mins
Another good chance for the home side, with Burns once again at the centre of it as he picks it up on the right and cuts it back for Szmodics, who tests Onana with an effort from outside the box.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
16:40 , Chris Wilson
9 mins
Half a chance for Ipswich after some great work from Hutchinson, who holds it up well and sweeps it wide to Burns. His cross is a good one, but it narrowly misses Delap and Szmodics.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United
16:39 , Chris Wilson
6 mins
More decent passing from United sees it worked wide to Amad, who lays it off to Eriksen, but the Dane can only fire wide from distance.
Ipswich work their first decent attack, and it ends with Delap hooking an effort over.
Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United

Barely any time to get settled, but it’s 1-0 at Portman Road. It was a scrappy first minute or so, but United have got themselves ahead thanks mainly to brilliant work from Amad Diallo.
The home side are enjoying some possession now though as they look to get back into it, and they win a corner.
GOAL! Ipswich 0-1 Manchester United

GOAL! Well, not a bad start. United are ahead just after the minute mark!
It’s all about the wing-back play too, with Amad receiving the one-two pass in his own half and driving past a couple of challenges all the way into the Ipswich box. He cuts it back to Rashford, and the number nine manages to bundle it in at the near post!

Match facts
16:15 , Chris Wilson
This will be Rúben Amorim’s first match in charge of Manchester United. Aged 39 years and 302 days on the day of this game, he’s the youngest to take charge of his first match for the Red Devils since Wilf McGuinness in August 1969 (31y 288d).
Manchester United have won 17 of their last 19 Premier League games against newly promoted opponents (D2) since a 4-1 loss at Watford in November 2021. Away from home, they have won their last nine league games at promoted sides; in English top-flight history, only Chelsea have won 10+ away matches in succession against such opponents (21 in a row from October 2002 to November 2008).
Alejandro Garnacho has been directly involved in 20 Premier League goals for Manchester United (13 goals, 7 assists), one of only two non-British players to reach that figure for the Red Devils before turning 21, along with Cristiano Ronaldo (25 – 14 goals, 11 assists).
Match facts
16:10 , Chris Wilson
Ipswich have lost four of their last five Premier League games against Man Utd (D1), failing to score in each defeat. This is their first such meeting since a 1-0 home loss in April 2002.
They are looking to earn back-to-back wins in the Premier League for the first time since February 2002 (a run of four that started with a 2-1 win against Tottenham).
Ipswich are the only side without a home win in the Premier League this season (P5 D3 L2). Only five newly promoted sides have failed to win their opening six home matches of a Premier League campaign, all of which went on to be relegated: Swindon Town in 1993/94, Crystal Palace in 1997/98, Norwich City in 2004/05, Sunderland in 2005/06, and Burnley in 2023/24.
Head-to-head
16:05 , Chris Wilson
These two sides have met 51 times in the past, though not since 2015, when United won 3-0 in an FA Cup tie.
The last time the two sides met in the league was in 2002, when United ran out 1-0 winners thanks to a penalty from Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
Overall, United have won 25 meetings, Ipswich have won 17, and nine have ended as draws.
McKenna: “I think we have enough depth to be competitive”
15:57 , Chris Wilson
In his pre-match press conference, Kieran McKenna said that he thinks that his side “ have enough depth at the moment to be competitive in the match”.
“We are going to put out the team we think gives us the best chance to win the game.
“We will have some good options and hopefully if we can get a few players back in the next week or so we will have a strong squad available for a busy run of games.
“We’ve had the balance of a little bit of rest – because we know it is a busier spell coming up now right through until the March international fixtures – but also some good preparation time. Preparation time that has been important with the team we are facing next under new management.
“It’s been about getting them focused and ready for a big performance on Sunday.”
Leading Man Utd back to top a ‘huge responsibility’, says new boss Ruben Amorim
15:50 , Chris Wilson
Ruben Amorim is relishing the “huge responsibility” of taking Manchester United back to the top as the new head coach prepares to take charge for the first time at Ipswich.
Having stayed at Sporting Lisbon for three final matches after being named Erik ten Hag’s successor on November 1, the 39-year-old will finally be in the Red Devils’ dugout for Sunday’s trip to Portman Road.
Quite the task awaits Amorim given underperforming United entered the weekend 13th in the Premier League standings with a paltry four wins from their opening 11 matches.

Form guide
15:42 , Chris Wilson
Before the international break, Ipswich won their first game of the season with a 2-1 victory at Spurs. In the four matches before that, they had had three losses and a draw, including a 4-3 loss to Brentford and 4-1 loss to West Ham.
Kieran McKenna’s side sit 19th in the league, but only one point away from the safety zone.
United have had mixed results themselves, though things have picked up slightly since Erik ten Hag was sacked. They beat Leicester 3-0 last time out, and beat PAOK in the Europa League after a draw to Chelsea at Old Trafford.
They sit 12th on just 15 points as things stand.
Why Ruben Amorim can succeed where previous Manchester United managers have failed
15:35 , Chris Wilson
In preparing for his presentation as Manchester United manager, Ruben Amorim has been mindful of an idea that has guided his coaching career so far. That is, if you can’t say something in a single sentence, don’t do it. Work on it, so it’s clear.
That approach has never been more necessary than at Old Trafford, where constant noise and fire have created this fog around one of English football’s great institutions. The team, as much as anything else, could do with some simple clarity.
That is what the players have found in Amorim’s training sessions. They’ve been impressed by the focus of his instructions, as he immerses himself in the drills. It’s only a decade since Amorim was a player, after all. The image so far has been assured.

Ruben Amorim names first Manchester United line-up

We thought there would be some surprises! Ruben Amorim names his first Manchester United team, with a front-three of Alejandro Garnacho, Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford and both Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund on the bench!
The back three is made up of Noussair Mazrouai, Matthijs De Ligt and Jonny Evans, with Amad Diallo and Diogo Dalot the full-backs? Casemiro and Christian Eriksen are the midfield pair and there is strength on the bench, with Mason Mount, Kobbie Mainoo and Luke Shaw all there.

Manchester United are preparing to embark on a new era as Ruben Amorim takes charge for their Premier League fixture against Ipswich.
The Portuguese manager arrived at Old Trafford during the international break after being identified as Erik ten Hag’s permanent successor.
He will now get to work on continuing the club’s strong recent form, with interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy overseeing a promising period.
And Amorim could be immediately boosted by a couple of injury returnees.

Smiling but uncompromising, Ruben Amorim reveals how he will shape Manchester United
15:00 , Chris Wilson
Ruben Amorim was running through Manchester United’s recent managerial history. “The guys who won everything like [Louis] van Gaal and [Jose] Mourinho,” he said. “New ones who knew the club inside out like [Ole Gunnar] Solskjaer, and one of the best that there will ever be outside the five strongest leagues was [Erik] ten Hag. You have different type of coaches, the same result.”
That result sometimes involved a cup or two, but never a true title challenge. None ultimately succeeded; not by the standards of what Amorim called a “global” club, “still the best” in England. All of which may have deterred many a manager. Old Trafford, arguably, has been a graveyard for them. Brushing aside the suggestion it has become the impossible job, Amorim instead arrived with a belief that he can end the trend of disappointment, with a confidence that did not come across as arrogance.
It is two decades since another wunderkind of Portuguese coaching anointed himself a “Special One”. Amorim came with a message from Mourinho, an open acknowledgement he is influenced by him, yet differentiating himself from his predecessor. There was charisma with less bravado, a coach positioning himself for the future, not yesterday’s man.

What is the team news?
14:50 , Chris Wilson
Omari Hutchinson, Wes Burns and Nathan Broadhead are doubts, as is Kalvin Phillips after serving a one-game ban. Jacob Greaves and Jack Taylor could return.
Leny Yoro and Luke Shaw were able to return to training before the international break but Lisandro Martinez is a doubt after withdrawing from international duty due to back pain. Ruben Amorim has committed to playing 3-4-3 from his first game.

Good afternoon
14:30 , Jamie Braidwood
Ruben Amorim takes charge of Manchester United for the first time as the Portuguese coach takes his new team to Ipswich in the Premier League.
Amorim was appointed following the sacking of Erik ten Hag – and interim boss Ruud van Nistelrooy steadied the ship with a win and a draw in the league.
Former Sporting coach Amorim will seek to build on the 3-0 win over Leicester while starting to implement his own ideas on his new players, as United look to climb the table.
Ipswich also want to improve their position after claiming their first win since returning to the top flight in the 2-1 victory over Tottenham before the international break.under Louis van Gaal.
This fixture also brings a reunion for Ipswich manager Kieran McKenna, who was an assistant coach at Manchester United.
