Robbie Brady says playing for his country has always been the highlight of his career after scoring the Republic of Ireland’s late winner in their 2-1 victory over Finland on Thursday.

The Preston defender was named player of the match after setting up Liam Scales’ headed equaliser and then earning his side a comeback win with an 88th-minute strike.

“I put in a lot of hard work and I feel I deserve to be in around it at the minute, and I’m glad I got to show it tonight,” said Brady after helping his team to a first-ever away win in the Nations League.

“It means the world for me. Like I’ve always said, the highlight of my career has always been playing for my country and you realise when you’re not in the fold how much you miss it.”

The victory sealed Heimir Hallgrimsson’s first competitive win as manager at the third attempt as the Republic boosted their Nations League B2 campaign after defeats to England and Greece in September.

‘Injuries haven’t helped’

Brady’s contribution followed a first-half howler by his central defensive partner Nathan Collins, who gifted the Finns the opening goal when his woefully hit attempted backpass allowed Joel Pohjanpalo in to score.

The 32-year-old played a prominent part in the Republic’s Euro 2016 campaign but injuries have played a part in his failure to re-establish himself on a consistent basis under recent managers.

“All you can do is get your head down and work hard and that’s what I’ve been doing,” added Brady.

“I’ve got game time under my belt at club level, I feel fit. I’ve had a fair share of injuries over the years, that hasn’t helped.

“But I will always continue to work hard if it gives me half a chance of getting back and playing in a green jersey I’ll give everything I have.”

The Republic of Ireland travel to Athens on Tuesday to face Greece, who beat England 2-1 on Thursday.
