Jacques-Cartier Bridge completely closed due to protest

Must read

The Jacques-Cartier Bridge, connecting Montreal’s South Shore to downtown Montreal, is completely closed in both directions for a major police operation, causing a major traffic headache for rush-hour drivers.

In a social media post on X, Longueuil police said it’s not clear when the bridge will reopen and drivers should avoid the area.

According to Radio-Canada footage at the scene, it appears protesters climbed one of the structures of the span, forcing police to shut down the bridge.

The incident began just before 5:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Provincial and Montreal police are on the scene trying to bring an end to the situation.

As of 6 a.m., traffic on the bridge was severely backed up in both directions.

A protester who spoke with Radio-Canada said the protest was organized by two groups: Last Generation Canada and Collectif Antigone.

They’re calling for an end to investments in fossil fuels.
