The World Flying Discs Federation World Team Disc Golf Championships took place from November 6-9, at the Mundaring Sporting club in Perth, Western Australia and a local Burlington woman was part of the Canadian contingent.

Team Canada was one of 22 teams competing at the event. The first part of the event was a round robin to seed the teams. The top 16 teams then competed in a knockout style tournament until the gold medal winner was determined.

This tournament is a team event where each country competes against another country in four rounds of match play (two singles, two doubles). The country that wins the most matches is awarded the victory.

Team Canada started in one of the more difficult pools competing against Norway, Australia, Germany, Latvia and China. Canada placed fourth in its pool and entered the main tournament of 16 as a fourth seed. Canada played Finland in the Game of 16. Both teams battled hard, and the teams finished with a draw. This resulted in a sudden death tiebreaker. Invermere, BC’s Max Regitnig played the hole cleanly, while Finland’s player threw a disc out of bounds. Canada won and proceeded to the quarter finals.

Canada played Austria and handily beat them in all four matches which sent them to the semi-finals against the host country.

Canada had an exciting battle with Australia. Mission, BC’s Stewart McIsack almost gave Canada the win with a perfect putt that chained out at the last moment. Australia and Canada played to a draw and once again Canada headed to a sudden death tiebreaker on the same hole they played against Finland. This time, Cranbrook, BC’s Casey Hanemayer had the honours. Unfortunately, Casey threw out of bounds this time while Australia played clean. The loss sent Canada to the bronze medal match against Norway. Canada played strong against Norway and was awarded the bronze medal. Team Australia took the silver after losing to Estonia, who took the gold medal.

This bronze medal win qualifies Team Canada for 2025 International World Games in Chengdu, China. Disc golf has not been at the International World Games since 2016. The hope is that this event helps disc golf to eventually get an opportunity to be at the Olympic games.
