Maclarent Street apartment fire snarls morning traffic

Ottawa Fire Services took down a smoky fire in a mid-level apartment building Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called at about 9:15 a.m. from a monitoring agency reporting active fire alarms at a multi-residential four-storey building in the 300 block of Maclaren Street in the Centretown neighbourhood.

Several 911 callers reported black and grey smoke coming from the structure.

Firefighters arriving at the scene confirmed smoke coming from the structure and reported that residents had evacuated.

Firefighters entered the structure and quickly located the fire in a third-floor unit.

The fire was extinguished and contained to the unit before it could spread.

Searches of the building confirmed there were no occupants inside.

Victim services was contacted for one adult who was displaced due to the fire.

All other residents were allowed back inside.

A fire inspector was assigned to determine the cause and point of origin of the fire.
