A man from Maine who was the subject of an emergency alert and manhunt in northeast New Brunswick last week has been charged with second-degree murder.

Keith Maurice Martin, 47, was charged during a court appearance Saturday.

It’s alleged Martin killed 48-year-old Mark Mitchell of Esgenoôpetitj First Nation on Sept. 5.

Martin is scheduled to appear in Miramichi provincial court on Wednesday.

A news release from RCMP doesn’t mention whether he may face other charges.

RCMP Cpl. Hans Ouellette previously said that Neguac RCMP responded to a report around 1:45 p.m. on Thursday from a person who had been shot in Esgenoôpetitj, also known as Burnt Church.

At the scene, police found a 48-year-old man dead and an injured man. The injured man was taken to hospital with what police described as non-life-threatening injuries.

RCMP issued an emergency alert and asked Esgenoôpetitj residents to remain indoors as police searched for Martin.

He was arrested in the Esgenoôpetitj area on Friday, just over 24 hours after police were initially called.
