A Thompson man is facing a number of charges in connection with an incident last fall in which he was shot by police following a short chase and an attempted gunpoint carjacking, police say.
Gypsumville RCMP had been searching for a vehicle that had been stolen in Thompson the previous night, and tried to stop it when it was spotted on Oct. 24 on Highway 6, south of Pinaymootang First Nation, about 240 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, .
The driver, 39, refused to pull over, police say.
After a short pursuit, he stopped, got out of the stolen vehicle and tried to carjack another one at gunpoint before one of the pursuing officers shot him, according to a previous news release.
The man got back into the vehicle and drove a short distance before coming to a stop in the ditch along Highway 6 where he was taken into custody.
He was taken by air ambulance to hospital with serious injuries, and remanded in police custody.
The suspect, 39, has been charged with robbery with an imitation gun, three counts of assault with a weapon, flight from police during pursuit, forcible confinement, endangering the public with a vehicle and uttering threats.
Manitoba’s police watchdog, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba, continues to investigate the incident. The civilian-led agency is charged with investigating all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba.
