New sexual assault charges laid against man affiliated with private Saskatoon Christian school

New charges have been laid against Ken Schultz, a former elder at Legacy Christian Academy in Saskatoon.

The Saskatoon Police Service (SPS) said Thursday that a man affiliated with the private Christian school had been charged in relation to a historical sexual assault.

The victim and the 75-year-old accused knew each other through the faith-based school, police said in a news release Thursday afternoon. The release did not name the school, but a police spokesperson confirmed it was the same school, which is now called Valour Academy.

The accused has been charges with sexual assault, invitation to touching and assault with a weapon, according to SPS. He turned himself in on Wednesday.

CBC News has confirmed the accused is Ken Schultz, who was also charged in July 2023 with sexual assault and assault with a weapon in connection with the school. His lawyer vehemently denied those allegations in a statement to CBC News at the time.

A civil lawsuit identifies Schultz as a former elder at the school.

In total, five staff members at the school have been charged with assaulting a student. Most recently, a woman listed as a teacher on the school’s website was charged with assault with a weapon in a May 2024 incident with a student, SPS said on Tuesday.

CBC News has interviewed more than two dozen parents and former students who say there was rampant, systemic abuse at the school that ranged from sexual and physical abuse to solitary confinement and exorcisms.
