A new study found that the interest in “cool-cations” — cooler, off-peak destinations — are the hot spots of choice as Canucks are not only looking for downtime, but relief from extreme weather and hordes of people.
Of course, there are many who want to get away to a locale where they can lay poolside or by an ocean and soak up all the rays. But increasingly, Canadians are looking for climate-resilient places that offer peace of mind.
“‘Cool-Cations’ address a growing need for climate-conscious and comfortable travel,” Chadd Andre, executive vice president at Flight Centre Canada, said in a statement.
“Canadians are drawn to destinations with temperate climates, natural resilience, and opportunities to avoid heat, overcrowding, and weather-related disruptions.”

The study, by YouGov and commissioned by Flight Centre Canada, relied on a sample of 1,066 Canadians who said they are likely to travel for pleasure in the next 12 months. It found that more than half (54%) are concerned about travel disruptions, while 41% worry about severe weather when choosing their holiday destinations.

Of those surveyed, 82% said they have experienced a travel disruption in the past year. One in three of those travellers reported a flight was cancelled due to severe weather.
Despite the struggles, more proactive planning including booking earlier (many have already booked for next spring) and travelling during off-peak times allows Canadians to enjoy their vacations.
