The launch came as Secretary of State Antony Blinken visited South Korea to meet with its acting leader and reaffirmed the security alliance between Washington and Seoul.
The move by North Korea may generate more concern than usual given the political chaos taking place in South Korea, following President Yoon Suk Yeol’s brief martial law declaration and his impeachment. Yoon cited the need to eradicate political support for Pyongyang among factors for his short-lived move. Several leading defense officials have been replaced or are facing investigation.
